Senior prom

prom
The senior prom was really a non-event for me, back in 1985. If I didn't have a girlfriend at the time, I can't imagine I would have tried to find someone to go with.

When the photo (right) came back from the processor, I took a little heat from Marie for the jackass grin I hadn't even realized I had affixed to my face.

11:39 Am-12:19 Pm

Unfortunately, I missed writing last week, because I was so busy. I'm sure most of the details have escaped me now, but I think I can remember the bigger things that happened.

Sometime during that time I'm sure I drove a couple of times, and probably gave Marie a ride home.

Saturday was the prom. I spent the day washing the car, inside and out, and then went to pick up her corsage. Then I showered and got dressed, and left to pick her up.

We were going to have her mother take some pictures, but we had to wait for her Dad to come home with the film. After he arrived, he couldn't figure out how to work the camera, so we didn't get any there. We were going to stop by my house and have some taken there, but we were late as it was so we didn't.

We met the other guys at the hospital parking lot. When we had all arrived, we went to Summerside, in Randalogh (no, I didn't even come close to spelling that right.)

Anyway, on the way over Benji started out in the lead, but then pulled over into a U-turn spot, while the rest of us stopped on the side. I guess his needles were going haywire, so he stopped ... in a U-turn spot, of course.

Well, then Paul took the lead, and him and Benji battled over it all the way, as they kept passing each other, and I had to do 65-70 mph all the way just to keep up with them.

We finally got there and had a good meal. When we were done it was about 9:15 Pm, or so. We headed back, and got there at about 10:00 Pm. We went in and sat around, and checked the place over, and found Aaron.

There were only about two hours left. The band was real good. I danced about three slow dances with Marie and that was it. She danced about three dances with other guys since I wouldn't dance with her fast.

When it was over I brought her home to change, and then we went to Jon Giffin's at about 1:00 Am. Jon, Michelle Harold, Tara, Dan, Leif Simpson, Jamie Geist, and Karen Northland were there, too. We ate popcorn and played Clue and that was about it. We left around 2:40 Am.

After I brought Marie home we stayed there about an hour or so, and I got home around 4:00 Am.

I think that about does it for that week. I seems like Sunday we did something, which made me unable to do my entry that day, because I still had a little homework to do when I got ho~m, but what we did I can't remember.

Well, let's see. This past week went by pretty fast. Tuesday I brought back my tux during a double free period. Aaron and Paul went with me, and we had lunch downtown while were in Bridgton.

Then that day Marie and I left before 9th period to go to her house and fix her brother's birthday cake. We decorated it. When her brother came home we went out to eat at the Steak House, Marie, Mike and me. (Mrs. R's treat, for Mike's birthday, but it felt like mine.)

I had to stay up 'til 11:00 Pm that night to finish my homework after I got home around 10:00 Pm.

Wednesday we had planned on coming over here after school and watching a movie in the evening since we didn't have school the next day. But Marie's mom wanted her to mow the lawn first, so we went to her house, where we got stuck into getting the pool ready and also mowing. I did all the tractor mowing, while Marie did the push mowing. I actually had a pretty good time, maybe because I felt good helping out. When we were done it was around 8:00 Pm, so we decided not to bother going to my house, but just to stay there.

The next morning we had to march in the parade. I got there about 9:45 Am, and after the parade Marie and myself went to Sky Gate and played some games. We also met Benji there.

Then we came back here and had lunch, washed my car and then went on a walk up on the Norton trails. When we got back it was 3:30 Pm, and Marie's mom had said to be home by 4:00 Pm. So Marie called her and asked if she could stay for supper, but her mom told her all of the things she had to do to get ready for the Drama club pool party she was having on Friday. So I told Marie I'd go home with her and help her get ready.

First we stopped by her father's store and got some money and drove to Bridgton to get some Chinese food. Then we came back and ate it, and then skimmed the pool, washed the concrete, washed the edge, and washed the chairs.

Later in the evening we ran down to Happy's for her mom, but couldn't find what we needed. When we got back her mom told me my mom had called to tell me that P&C wanted to see me Friday morning.

I left around 9:30 Pm that night, because Marie had school, but I didn't: Senior Skip Day.

The next morning I went to P&C and they told me that I was hired, and wanted me to come in at 4:00 Pm that afternoon to be orientated. Well, Marie's party started at 3:00 Pm and ended at 6:00 Pm, so that time really sucked, since I was really looking forward to the party. But I had no choice, and said I'd be there.

The rest of the day before the party was spent running errands for my Mom, getting stuff for the party, spending a little time in Sky Gate and getting some model airplane fuel. I've received $50 total in the mail for graduation. I looked for a pair of sunglasses since I lost my good pair, but couldn't find a pair I liked. Then I picked Marie up at school before 9th period so we could get ready for the party.

I had lunch there, and had to leave around 3:40 Pm. I got at P&C and we read through the handbook together, and walked around the store. I got back at Marie's around 5:20 Pm. I was really pissed off because they choose to start me Saturday morning, when I was supposed to march around the school track with the band.

I stayed after the party had left and left around 11:30 Pm. Marie and myself did go swimming later, after her mom and dad went out to eat.

Saturday I went to work for the first day, and didn't like it too much. I was real nervous about working the time card and finding out what I was supposed to do. First I swept the floor, which I think I have to do every day I work at the start. Then I bagged groceries, ran price checks, and retreived carts from the lot the rest of the day. I worked from 10:00 Am to 2:00 Pm. I was quite ready to leave when it was time to go. I have to go back on Wed and Thurs from 4:00 Pm to 8:00 Pm.

After I got home I went to Gram's and mowed her lawn, and she gave me her bottles and I returned them before I went home. ($6.05)

When I got home I talked with Marie and then studied for the evening until about 9:00 Pm, then watched TV and got to bed a little earlier than usual, after talking with Marie again.

Yesterday was dark and dismal, but today is great. I have to study for finals today, and yesterday, too, which is why I didn't see Marie last night. She was going to drop over today just for five minutes, but I couldn't find-out why. She must have something to give to me, that's all I can figure out. Anyway, she called and asked me to come over and swim for a little while this evening and I said I would, so instead of her coming over for a little while, I'm going to go over there.

Like I said, I'm going to study this afternoon, but it's going to be hard. I think I might have to do the hand mowing, if Dad doesn't do it. I'd also like to get my R/C plane ready to go, but I might put that off. I've got the fuel.

Well, gotta go. Sorry for the lousy quality of this entry, but I'm in a hurry to get going on my studying. Appendix A-51 is a letter from Marie, although it's dated 3/22/85 it's meant to be 5/22/85. Later, dude.

Curtains for the Class of '85

As the 1985 school year came to a close, and my graduation from Jefferson High School was imminent, I don't think I allowed myself to really think too much about it. As this, the 20th entry to my 1985 diary shows, the end of the school year seemed to kinda sneak up on me.

7:14-7:35 Pm

This week kind of flew by, for some reason. The end of the school year is rapidly approaching, and I'm so busy with things that I've barely been noticing. I think we get out on the 6th; we only have about 2 1/2 weeks left.

Anne had the car all last week, so I didn't drive to school once, although Benji drove once, and gave me a ride.

Some time ago I got my Physics paper in and my major Brit Auth paper in. Now I've got to write my Econ paper for the 27th, and I'm free of major assignments for the year, except for finals.

Thursday was our concert. It went quite well. I rode over with Benji before the concert. He had to give Nicole Sullivan a ride, too. I think she's got a crush on him. She is one of the biggest bitches I know, and I really hate her guts. Anyway, we had to leave a little early so we could bring her to Happy's to get a pair of black pants for the concert. While we were there we met Aaron, who was getting a roll of film for the evening; more on that later. He left to go home after that, and we went to school.

For Jazz band Aaron, Benji and I wore shorts, and crazy shirts. Aaron wore his Hawaiian shirt and I wore one borrowed from Marie. We also wore those necklaces of flowers around our necks and shades, of course. The concert went well.

After the concert Aaron, Benji and I went to take another Dirt Bag picture. A long time ago we took our picture using Aaron's self-timer in front of a beer truck down at the bottom of the hill our school's on. There's a distributor there. The picture's a riot. We all jumped up in the air, and luckily caught some real neat facial expressions and stuff. Anyway, we thought it was so neat that Aaron wanted to try and get some more like that. So after the concert we went to the same place, and did some stuff like that. We took about four there. Then we went to ABEP to take some there, but it didn't look like it was going to work. So instead we did some nutty stuff in front of the Levi's sign next door.

Marie had come along, and Benji got trapped into giving Nicole a ride home, so she had to come along, too. After that Benji drove Marie home, and then Nicole home before dropping me off.

Friday Benji gave me a ride to school. After school Marie/Benji and myself went down to the arcade. Then we went to ABEP to play Xevius (it's back, after a long absence). Then we went to Maynard to get some saline solution for Benji. Marie and myself went to Carry-Away Video to pick up the entertainment for Saturday night. Then he brought us home.

Friday night Marie and I went to see "LadyHawk." It was okay. After that we went to Bridgton and got a ribbon for her printer and stopped by the arcade on the way back. Then we went to her house and watched TV and played on her computer, too. I went home and got home around 12:40 Am, a little earlier than usual because ...

Saturday morning I had a hair appointment at 11:00 Am. It looks nice now. It was quite long before. All afternoon I worked on reading a Brit Auth book.

Saturday night I went to Marie's and watched "His Girl Friday" (a film based on "The Front Page") and "Oh, God!" on video. I got home around 1:20 Am. Before I left I developed a headache and didn't feLl very good, maybe due to a recent lack of sleep.

Next Saturday is the prom. We still haven't figured out where we're going to eat. We're going to go with Larry/Judy, Benji/Liza Polanski, Paul/Cole, and Jamie Geist/Karen Northland, but the whole mob of us hasn't decided where to go yet. We'd better get on it. This week I've also got to see about getting a corsage for Marie. I don't know if you have to order one ahead of time or what. I want to get one that'll go with what she'll be wearing, which she tells me is lavender.

Went to Burger King and had a psedo-interview Tuesday. He asked me some general questions about my experience, and what hours I'd like to work and stuff. Told me I'd get a call soon, but I haven't. Tomorrow I'm going to drive to school and go back to Garry's, BK, the hospital and maybe some car place in E. Maynard, that I heard were looking for somone. I'll have a lot less to do after I find a job.

Guess that's about it for now. Will write again next weekend. Shalom.

Canned radio

wply
WPLY (right) was the worst type of automated radio station. An ugly, mechanical Behemoth, it was filthy with technology way out-of-date even by mid-1980s standards.

Though I didn't get my foot in the door in the spring of '85, as this, the 19th entry to my 1985 diary, reveals, I did start working at the station the summer following my freshman year at Middletown College.

I worked four summers on-the-air at the station, and its live, AM 1,00-watt country music sister station WRAI, while I was home from Middletown.

Though it helped me get my "air legs," it was argueably the worst job I ever had.

Making minimum wage — back when minimum was $3 and change — I worked all sorts of dayparts, including a hefty helping of overnights. All the while taking occasional verbal abuse from the stations' sales manager for whatever reason he could think up, and receiving communications from the stations' program director almost exclusively via type-written notes he posted on the station's studio wall.

After I graduated from Middletown, I worked one final summer there in 1989. Even though there were a couple of full-time openings at the time, I'd decided I'd take unemployment at the end of the summer, rather than sign-on full-time.

My first "real" radio job came in August '89, when I moved over to another local station some 30 minutes away.

I returned to the WRAI/WPLY studios only once — a few years ago, when I accompanied my current employer to an interview session there. Now a group of three stations, they had rearranged and rebuilt the facilities to such an extent that it was impossible to imagine what it used to be like back when I worked there.

8:16-8:33 Pm

Appendix update: A-48 is a program to a play Drama Club members went to see; A-49 is a letter from WRAI/WPLY; A-50 is the program to a play Marie and I went to see Saturday.

Get ready for a quick entry, I've really been on the go this weekend, and would like maybe 1/2 hour before I go to bed to clear things up in my mind.

Heard from WRAI/WPLY by the letter I receieved on Wednesday. Marie and myself went down to Bridgton and picked out a tux to rent for the prom. After we came back here and the notice was here. I was really pissed-off at first, and just didn't say anything. Finally, after about 20 minutes or so of me being in my room, and Marie being out on the lawn, where she went after I told her I'd like to be alone (she always goes to the extreme, doesn't she?), she came back in and we started to talk a bit. Then mom came home, and we had supper; mom went shopping, and eventually I brought Marie home.

I've pretty much gotten over it now. I've been looking thoroughly for a job. Friday after school I went around, and all Saturday afternoon I hit the pavement. The only encouragment I got was from Burger King who wants me to come back between 2-4 Pm on Tuesday, I assume for an interview. The thought of working there is neally humiliating, but if it's all I can get, I've got to take it. I would have been so proud to be able to say that I worked at a radio station; instead I'm going to be embarrassed and ashamed.

Went to see a play at Dartmouth on Tuesday I think. Was a fantastic play, with an incredible set. Marie and Aaron went, and about seven other people. We took a van up.

Friday went to the school dance with Marie; Aaron was there, too. It was a Hawaiian dance, but I didn't have any topical garb, so I went mundane style. Aaron, Marie and myself were out in the courtyard and Aaron and myself were making jokes about the trees being coconut trees and stuff. Some other two kids who must have been stoned or drunk or something heard us, and started to give us some shit about it, yelling at the top of their lungs. We gave them a little back, and then sat down and forgot about it. Aaron left, and a little after they mentioned it again. So Marie and myself left. Later inside one of them brought it up to me again, and I ignored them.

That whole ordeal sort of ruined my night, so Marie and I left around 9:45 Pm. I brought her home, and stayed there until the usual time, somewhere around 1:00 Am.

Saturday, after job hunting, went to see "Beyond the Fringe." It was fantastic. I would have killed to have been able to be in it. It was a series of comedy sketches, in the British vain of humor, just a riot. They had some fabulous monologs, and small cast sketches in it. I'm going to remember the show if I ever want to enter a talent show or cabaret night anywhere. I'd love to do something from the show.

Today I cleaned the inside of the car; I cleaned the outside the day before. Anne is bringing it back to Dawson with her for a week. Right now Anne and Aaron are here to pick it up.

We have our spring concert this Thursday. Haven't been thinking about or practicing the music much, but I think it'll go okay.

Guess that's about it for this short entry. Will write again, next week; same time (or close to same time), same place.
